Surgical Instrument and Equipment Technician

Veterinary Surgical Centers (VSC) , the leading small animal surgery and rehabilitation practice in Northern Virginia, is seeking energetic and motivated Surgical Instrument and Equipment Technicians to join our growing team. This position can be part-time or full-time (non-exempt). working primarily in our Vienna location.

Duties of the successful candidate will include:

SURGERY

Monitor surgery schedule to ensure all necessary equipment will be available to the surgeon at the correct facility
Prepare OR for surgery; select appropriate packs, instruments, and materials for the procedure being performed
Take patients to and from surgery as requested
Perform as surgical runner in the OR as requested

SURGICAL PACKS & STERILIZATION

Be familiar with the proper way to clean surgical instruments after surgery, to include use of the ultrasonic cleaner and instrument milk
Be familiar with the proper way to wrap surgical packs, extra instruments, and other materials for sterilization
Be familiar with the use of the autoclave and gas sterilization machine and perform all routine maintenance
Inform the Inventory Manager of any broken or damaged equipment
Be certified by Andersen to use the EO gas sterilizer
Change cold sterilization

INVENTORY

Take routine inventory of stock and add necessary items to the ‘Want List’
Maintain pack, extra-instrument, and equipment lists
Restock drawers, shelves, surgery and refill alcohol and scrub containers
Order necessary hardware per the instruction of the Inventory Manager

CLEANING OF SURGERY AND TREATMENT ROOMS

Surgery – clean all surfaces, lights, table, table tray, vacuum and mop floor
Treatment – keep tables clean, pick up used syringes, hair, and garbage; keep anesthesia and other machines clean to include their wheels; keep counters litter free and clean, clean keyboards and computer terminals; keep food out of the area
Radiology – pick up after any procedures, keep protective gear hung up and cleaned
Proper handling of all digital radiography equipment to include touch screen, gray scale monitor, computer boxes, and server

MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES

Learn the veterinary software and assist Surgeons with accessing information
Check to see that all animals have food and water (unless medically withheld), and are clean
Clean cages and runs during the day
Attend staff meetings and contribute constructive feedback
